We took a break from astronomy this morning and Arizona Star Tales' staff member Tom Rosner provided a display and workshop on desert preparedness and survival at the South Mountain Environmental Education Center. Are you properly prepared when you hike the desert?
It was such a nice morning with no AST formal events planned, that we decided to set up a Solar Viewing Event at a hiking trailhead so hikers could view the sun through our Hydrogen Alpha telescope. We just can not get enough of hearing all the "OH, WOW's!!!" when our guests see features of the surface of the Sun with this very specialized instrument.
Had a great time visiting the Lowell Observatory near Flagstaff, Arizona! Here's the Astrograph Telescope Clyde Tombaugh used to discover Pluto in 1930. Do you think Pluto is still a planet?
